The Richards Lab is seeking volunteer Research Assistants to support research studies on sleep and PTSD. This is an unpaid volunteer position and an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on research experience for those planning to apply to graduate school or pursue a career in medicine or the health sciences.

As a Volunteer Research Assistant in the Richards Lab you will be responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of research projects on PTSD and sleep.

Core Responsibilities

  • Recruitment activities, including preparing and sending recruitment mailings
  • Telephone screenings with potential participants to assess eligibility
  • Data collection, entry, and cleaning
  • Tracking participants across the study timeline

As experience and time commitment allow:

  • Guiding and supporting participants through study visits
  • Administering electrophysiology procedures (EEG, EMG, ECG)
  • Administering cognitive testing
  • Literature reviews, table and figure construction, and collection of relevant documents
  • General office and administrative support 
     

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing or planning to pursue a BA/BS in psychology, pre-med, or a related field
  • Availability for some evening or weekend hours, as required by sleep-related research
  • Minimum commitment of 8 hours per week
  • A one-year commitment, beginning with an onboarding period of approximately two months for VA badging, background check, and required trainings
  • Able to report in person to the San Francisco VA Medical Center

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with diagnostic and therapeutic issues related to PTSD and/or sleep disorders
  • Prior research experience
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • Experience in clinical settings
